PUPPY CLUB · BITING AND NIPPING

WHEN YOUR PUPPY BITES EVERYTHING, INCLUDING YOU

Sleeves, ankles, hands and the children's dressing gowns. Puppy biting is normal and it really hurts, and it's one of the things I'm asked about most, which is why Puppy Club has a whole module on it.

WHY PUPPIES NIP

Puppies learn about the world through their mouths, and nipping isn't one behaviour. It's at least five different ones that look the same from the outside, from play and teething to frustration and a puppy who has simply run out of steam, and each one needs a different response (which is why one trick never works for every bite).

The goal isn't to stop every bite instantly. It's to work out why your puppy is nipping, meet that need and show them what they can do instead, and as they grow, get enough sleep and learn what's OK to bite, the nipping eases.

WHERE IT USUALLY GETS STUCK

Ankles and clothes

Movement draws attention, so busy feet and dangling clothes turn into a chase game. Stopping the movement and offering a toy works far better than pulling away.

The evening witching hour

Evening nipping is very often an overtired puppy who has been awake too long. A nap usually does more than any amount of redirecting.

Children and visitors

Excitement and fast movement make children an easy target. A few simple rules for everyone in the house, and a plan for when visitors arrive, take a lot of the heat out of it.

From Lexi's diary. Lexi's diary covers why nipping spikes again at six months, and her overtired biting and chewing at seven months. It's real life with Matthew's puppy, written up as it happened.

THE MODERN GUIDE TO PUPPY GAMES

Games are brilliant for a mouthy puppy because they give all that energy somewhere to go. My games guide sets them out step by step, and they work alongside the structured teaching in Puppy Club, not instead of it.
