The Best Shoes for Dog Agility: Stay Safe and Stay Fast

At Paws Academy we train on grass, and thanks to the Irish weather that usually means wet, slippy grass. I've competed in agility for years, and I can tell you the wrong shoes will let you down at exactly the wrong moment. If you've ever slipped, twisted an ankle or felt you couldn't get there in time to help your dog, your shoes might well be the problem, because the right footwear keeps you safe, makes your handling clearer and helps you keep up.

THE SHORT ANSWER

The best shoes for dog agility have strong grip on grass, are light and flexible, and support quick turns. Field hockey shoes are a top choice for many handlers, as they're built for fast changes of direction on grass and artificial turf. Trail running shoes and moulded-stud football or rugby boots also work well. Avoid wellies: they have poor grip, no support and slow you down.

Why wellies are a no-go for agility

It's tempting to pull on your wellies when the field is muddy, but they're one of the worst things to handle in.

1. Poor grip

Wellies are made for walking through puddles, not for sprinting and turning. On wet grass they slide, and a slip mid-run can mean a nasty injury.

2. No support

Agility means sudden stops, sharp turns and sprints. Wellies give no ankle or arch support, which makes a rolled ankle more likely.

3. Heavy and clunky

Agility is all about timing. Heavy boots slow you down, make your cues late and make it harder to get where your dog needs you.

Why hockey shoes are a top choice for agility

Field hockey shoes (not ice hockey!) are built for fast movements on grass and artificial turf, which is exactly what agility handlers need.

  • Excellent grip on wet and dry grass

  • Light and supportive, without the bulk of boots

  • Some come in water-resistant versions

  • Built for high-intensity sport, so they last

Popular choices include the Adidas AdiPower Hockey, Nike Vapor Drive, Osaka Kai and Dita hockey shoes, several of which come in water-resistant or waterproof versions. Try a few on, as fit matters more than the brand.

Other good shoes for agility

Trail running shoes

Brands like Salomon and Inov-8 make trail shoes with deep treads and waterproof options. They're great on wet, uneven ground and comfortable for long training days.

Football or rugby boots with moulded studs

These give extra grip on soft grass. Choose moulded studs rather than screw-in metal ones, which can damage the field and catch when you pivot.

What to look for in agility shoes

  • Grip: deep, flexible treads or moulded studs for grass

  • Weight: the lighter, the better

  • Support: cushioned soles and enough support for quick turns

  • Flexibility: a sole that bends easily with your foot

  • Water resistance: useful for Irish weather and early-morning dew

Caring for your agility shoes

  • Knock off mud and clean them after each session

  • Let them air-dry, away from radiators and direct heat

  • Check the soles and replace them when the grip starts to wear

RENEE'S TIP

Wear your new shoes for a few training sessions before a competition. You'll get used to the grip, and you won't be breaking them in on the day.

FAQs

What are the best shoes for dog agility?

Shoes with strong grip on grass, a light and flexible sole, and support for quick turns. Field hockey shoes are a favourite, and trail running shoes and moulded-stud boots also work well.

Can I wear running shoes for agility?

Road running shoes often lack grip on wet grass. Trail running shoes with deeper treads are a much better choice.

Are hockey shoes good for dog agility?

Yes. They're designed for fast direction changes on grass and artificial turf, which is exactly what agility handlers need.

Can I wear wellies for dog agility?

It's best not to. Wellies have poor grip, no support and are heavy, which makes slips and rolled ankles more likely.

Are football boots allowed for agility?

Moulded studs are usually fine and give good grip. Avoid screw-in metal studs, and check your club or show rules first.
