Support That Makes Sense – Behaviour Consultations with Paws Academy

Behavioural challenges can feel exhausting and isolating, but they don’t have to stay that way. At Paws Academy, we offer one-to-one behavioural consultations designed to get to the heart of what’s going on. With a calm, practical approach and a fully personalised plan, we help you move from confusion and frustration to clarity and progress.

Each behavioural consultation lasts 90 minutes and begins with a detailed conversation to understand your dog’s behaviour, background, and environment. In most cases, this entire session is used for assessment and discussion to ensure we capture a full picture of what’s happening. Where appropriate and if time allows, we may begin some practical work with your dog. Follow-on sessions are 60 minutes and are where we start applying the training plan in a structured, step-by-step way.

After your consultation, we spend time writing up your personalised behavioural report. This includes a summary of everything discussed, tailored training exercises, and relevant online resources to support your work at home. Reports are typically sent within one to two days of the session. Updates to your report are provided after each follow-up to reflect any progress or new strategies introduced.

We offer sessions in person at our Ballycroy and Westport locations, or remotely over Zoom, making it easy to access expert support wherever you are. Home visits may be available on request, though please note that due to high demand, there is often a waiting list of a few months. For Westport and home-based appointments, we ask that you get in touch with us directly to book.

Looking for more day-to-day training support? We also offer obedience training for dogs aged 12 months and over, covering lead walking, recall, good manners, and foundations for those interested in progressing to competitive obedience. Please note this is a separate service from behaviour consultations. You can find out more about that here.

Outside County Mayo? No problem – our Zoom consultations and virtual coaching options mean we can support clients throughout Ireland and internationally.

Understanding the Behaviour Modification Process

Behavioural change in dogs is a journey that requires time, patience, and consistent training. Our initial behavioural consultation is the first step in understanding the root causes of your dog’s behaviour and creating a structured plan to support positive change in your home environment.

What to Expect in the Initial Session

• The session lasts approximately 90 minutes and includes a detailed assessment of your dog’s behaviour.

• We will identify triggers, discuss contributing factors, and develop a personalised training plan.

• A comprehensive follow-up report will be provided, outlining key recommendations and next steps (this typically takes us 2-3 hours to complete).

Ongoing Behaviour Modification

• While the initial session lays the foundation, behaviour change takes time and cannot be resolved in a single visit.

• Follow-on training sessions (60 minutes each) allow us to monitor progress, make adjustments, and refine the training approach as needed.

• Every dog progresses at their own pace, and we cannot predict exactly how many sessions will be required. However, we are committed to working with both you and your dog to achieve long-term success.

A Commitment to Positive Change

Behaviour modification is not an instant fix—it requires consistency, patience, and positive reinforcement techniquesto achieve lasting results. By following the strategies we provide and remaining committed to the process, you will set your dog up for long-term success.

Services Provided at Our Base Location

At Paws Academy, we offer tailored one-on-one training sessions to address the specific needs of both dogs and their owners. Whether at our fully equipped training centre, at Drummindoo Stud or in the comfort of your home, we focus on resolving problem behaviours in the environment where they occur.

For behaviours centred around the home, our in-home sessions are ideal for addressing challenges like separation anxiety, destructive behaviours, or territorial issues. Working directly with Renee, our expert behavioural specialist, you’ll gain unique insights into your dog’s perspective—understanding the motivations and triggers behind their actions.

Renee’s guidance helps you not only correct unwanted behaviours but also establish positive, lasting habits that prevent future issues. These sessions promote a deeper connection with your dog, creating a calmer and more balanced relationship. Together, we’ll build a stress-free, harmonious lifestyle for both you and your dog.

Start with a 90-minute session designed to thoroughly assess your dog’s needs, address behavioural challenges, or establish general training foundations such as obedience, leash manners, or recall. This comprehensive session provides ample time for hands-on training, customised strategies, and practical guidance tailored to your dog’s unique personality and environment.

For ongoing support, our 60-minute follow-on sessions build on this progress, reinforcing learned behaviours, fine-tuning techniques, and addressing new challenges as they arise. Together, these sessions provide the tools and expertise to create a calmer, happier, and more harmonious life for both you and your dog.
