Skippy’s Full Story
From Fear to Trust

Meet Skippy
Skippy is a two-year-old Border Collie who came to us displaying nervous, avoidant behaviour and very low confidence. His guardian had been advised that an electric shock collar was the only way to manage his energy and obedience. Sadly, this approach only created more fear in Skippy.
He had become reluctant to approach his owner, flinched at sudden movement, and often cowered when called. The trust between them had been deeply damaged, and both were feeling the strain of their relationship.
The Training Approach
Our first step was to remove the shock collar completely and begin to rebuild the bond using positive reinforcement and clicker training. We focused on creating safe, low-pressure environments where Skippy could begin to make choices and experience rewards without fear.
Using food rewards, calm handling, and consistent marker cues, we helped Skippy understand what behaviours were wanted. More importantly, we helped him feel safe enough to offer those behaviours confidently.
Skippy’s Progress
✅ Skippy now approaches his guardian willingly and with a wagging tail
✅ He responds happily to the clicker and eagerly participates in training
✅ He is more relaxed on walks and no longer flinches at small movements
Ongoing Work
While Skippy is still learning to fully trust in unpredictable situations, his confidence has grown dramatically. His guardian has also developed new handling skills and now uses kindness and patience as the foundation of their training.
The shock collar is no longer part of their lives. Instead, their partnership is being rebuilt through mutual understanding, clear communication, and consistent rewards.
“He’s a completely different dog now. We actually enjoy training together, and I feel like he trusts me again”
Sarah, Skippy’s Guardian
