BREED GUIDE

YOUR WHIPPET PUPPY

Whippets are sighthounds, so they see the world through movement and can go from curled up on the sofa to flat out across a field in a second. They're gentle, sensitive and often stick to you like glue at home, and that sensitivity is something to protect as a puppy rather than push through.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

THE CHASE

RECALL BEFORE THE CHASE

A rabbit or a running dog can switch off their ears completely, so build recall around movement slowly and keep a long line on in open spaces. Plenty of chase games with a toy give that instinct somewhere safe to go.

COMFORT

SOFT BEDS, WARM COATS

They've very little fat or fur, so a puppy who won't go out in the rain is usually just cold. A warm bed, a coat for wet days and short toilet trips with you beside them make house training far easier.

CONFIDENCE

LET THEM WATCH FIRST

Sensitive isn't the same as nervous, but a worried Whippet puppy needs time. Let them watch new things from a distance and come forward when they're ready, rather than carrying them up to every new person and dog.
