BREED GUIDE

YOUR STANDARD POODLE PUPPY

The Standard Poodle is the original Poodle, a big water retriever with a brain to match, and nothing like the pampered show dog people picture. They're sensitive, watchful and very much a shadow to their family, so they learn quickly and feel things deeply.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

THE SHADOW

TIME ON THEIR OWN

Standards often want to be wherever you are. Teach short spells apart from the first week, go away and always come back, so being left alone later doesn't feel like the end of the world.

WATCHFUL

LET THEM WATCH FIRST

They can be wary of new people and places. Let your puppy watch from a distance and come forward when they're ready, and reward calm looking, rather than asking every visitor to fuss them.

GROOMING

CLIP-FRIENDLY FROM DAY ONE

That coat needs clipping for life, so gentle handling of feet, face and tail from day one pays off. Short sessions, a treat for every touch, and stop before your puppy has had enough.
