BREED GUIDE

YOUR SHIH TZU PUPPY

The Shih Tzu was bred as a companion, and they're happiest close to their people. They're friendly and full of character, but small and short-faced, so gentle handling, house training and a coat that needs real care are the things to get started on early.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

HOUSE TRAINING

OUT WITH THEM EVERY TIME

Small dogs can be slow to house train, and it's easy to miss the signs. Take your puppy out after every sleep, meal and game, go with them, and reward the wee straight away.

HANDLING

GENTLE HANDS

Lots of people want to pick up a Shih Tzu puppy, and not every puppy likes it. Teach a little cue before lifting, and let your puppy say hello on the floor when they choose.

GROOMING

FACE AND COAT CARE

That long coat and face need daily care. Short, happy brushing sessions with treats from day one make grooming something your puppy looks forward to.
