BREED GUIDE

YOUR MINIATURE SCHNAUZER PUPPY

Miniature Schnauzers were German farm ratters and watchdogs, so they're bright, alert and quick to tell you about anything going on outside. They're friendly with their family, though not really lapdogs, and the bark, other dogs and that coat are the things to plan for.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

BARKING

THANK THEM, THEN CALL THEM AWAY

Schnauzers are watchdogs at heart. When your puppy barks at the window, call them away to you for a treat and block the view they bark at most, before it turns into a habit.

OTHER DOGS

CALM MEETINGS

Like a lot of terriers, some Schnauzers can be sharp with other dogs. A few calm, well-matched friends in the early months are better than a busy park.

THE COAT

GROOMING FROM DAY ONE

That beard and coat need regular grooming. Short, happy handling sessions from the first week, with treats, make trips to the groomer much easier.
