BREED GUIDE

YOUR IRISH WOLFHOUND PUPPY

The Irish Wolfhound is a sighthound in a giant body, gentle and sensitive at home and still very quick to chase. They grow at an incredible rate and sadly don't live as long as smaller breeds, so a Wolfhound puppy needs careful exercise, calm handling and plenty of sofa time.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

GROWING UP

EASY ON THE EXERCISE

All that growing takes a lot out of them. Short, gentle walks, lots of sleep and no hard running on hard ground protect joints that are still forming.

THE CHASE

LONG LINE IN OPEN SPACES

They're still sighthounds, so a deer or a running dog can switch off recall. Use a long line in open spaces and build recall around movement slowly, with chase games to give that instinct an outlet.

HANDLING

TEACH IT WHILE THEY'RE SMALL

A dog this big needs to be happy at the vet and with handling before they're too heavy to lift. Touch paws, ears and mouth gently from day one, with a treat for every touch.
