BREED GUIDE

YOUR GSP PUPPY

The German Shorthaired Pointer was bred to hunt, point and retrieve all day, on land and in water. They're affectionate, clever and very much a family dog at home, and they also come with a big engine, a strong nose and a love of birds, so teaching them to switch off matters as much as exercise.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

SWITCHING OFF

CALM IS A SKILL

GSP puppies can keep going long past tired. Plenty of sleep, short training sessions and a settle on a mat help far more than adding more and more exercise.

RECALL

START THE LONG LINE EARLY

The nose and the love of birds can make recall vanish in a field. Practise in easy places first, reward well, and use a long line anywhere that isn't safe.

THE NOSE

GIVE THEM A JOB

Scatter their breakfast in the grass, hide toys and play find it. Sniffing tires a GSP brain far better than running after a ball.
