BREED GUIDE

YOUR BORDER TERRIER PUPPY

Border Terriers were bred to run with the horses and hounds and then go to ground, so they're tough, sporty little dogs with an otter head and a big heart. They're softer than a lot of terriers with their people, but the hunter is still in there, along with the dig and the bark.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

SMALL PETS

CAREFUL WITH SMALL PETS

Cats, rabbits and guinea pigs need slow, careful introductions with a Border Terrier puppy. Use gates and a lead at first, and reward calm looking rather than letting them chase.

RECALL

RECALL IS A GAME

When the hunter spots something, recall can vanish. Make coming back the best game going from day one, and use a long line around woods and fields.

DIGGING

GIVE THEM A DIG SPOT

They love to dig, so give them somewhere it's allowed, with toys buried to find. Check the garden fence too, because a Border can dig under it in no time.
