BREED GUIDE

YOUR BERNEDOODLE PUPPY

Bernedoodles are a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, and a lot of them are gentle, goofy teddy bears who love their families. They also grow up slowly, the big ones get very big, and the Bernese side brings some serious health risks, so it pays to know what you're taking on.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

HEALTH

ASK ABOUT THE FAMILY

The Bernese side has a high rate of cancer and a short average lifespan. Ask the breeder about health tests and how long the parents' relatives lived, and what they died of.

LEAD WALKING

BEFORE THEY WEIGH 35KG

A big Bernedoodle leaning into the lead can pull you off your feet. Teach loose lead walking while they're small, and keep practising right through the teenage months.

GROOMING

HANDLE GENTLY, OFTEN

That coat needs brushing for life and a groomer every few weeks. Handle paws, ears and face from day one, pair it with something nice, and stop while they're still happy.
