BREED GUIDE

YOUR BEAGLE PUPPY

Beagles are merry little hounds who follow their nose, bred to hunt in packs by scent. They're friendly and sociable, and they come with a voice, a stomach and a nose that can make recall the hardest thing you'll ever teach, so I'd start on it from the first day.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

RECALL

RECALL FROM DAY ONE

When a Beagle picks up a scent, the rest of the world disappears. Make coming back the best game going, practise at home first and keep a long line on in open spaces.

FOOD

GUARD THE WORKTOP

Beagles are scavengers and will help themselves to anything left out. Keep food out of reach from the start, use their love of food for training, and watch their weight.

THE VOICE

EXPECT A BIT OF NOISE

They were bred to bay, so some noise is part of the package. Reward quiet moments, give them plenty of sniffing to do, and practise short spells alone so they're not howling for company.
