BREED GUIDE

YOUR AUSTRALIAN KELPIE PUPPY

The Kelpie is a working sheepdog from Australia, bred to run all day in the heat and think for themselves out on the farm. In a family home that drive doesn't switch off on its own, so a Kelpie puppy needs as much help learning to settle as they do learning to sit.

WHAT I'D START IN THE FIRST WEEKS

OFF SWITCH

TEACH CALM ON PURPOSE

Kelpies can keep going long past the point where they should stop. Short training sessions, proper naps in a quiet space and a settle on a mat matter far more than another long walk.

MOVEMENT

WATCH THE CHASE

Bikes, joggers, cars and children running can all set off the herding side. Notice what catches their eye early and reward them for looking back at you, before the chase becomes a habit.

BRAIN WORK

SNIFF AND SOLVE

Brain work counts as exercise. Scatter feeding, simple puzzle games and learning tricks tire a Kelpie out in a way that more running never will, and keep them out of trouble.
